SonicWall no likey Oracle 11g

Recently I ran a major system upgrade, moving from ColdfusionMX, CentOS-32bit and Oracle 9i to Coldfusion8, CentOS-64bit and Oracle-11g. Here are some thoughts for those who care...

  1. Oracle 64bit is INCREDIBLY fast in comparison to the 32bit version, running on identical hardware
  2. Coldfusion8 is slightly confusing to install, particularly on Linux, and as to not re-invent the wheel...
    Gayan gives an excellent summary
  3. With Coldfusion8 inside of the DMZ and Oracle11g not, you may find that ports other than 1521 become issues if your firewall is SonicWall, my recommendation would be to place a direct connection to the Oracle11g box if a NIC is available for such a connection. And don't let the administration panel fool you, it will report that the data source is OK, but in reality it is not.
  4. Native Oracle drivers in coldfusion8 are very trouble free, and you may find that the previous usage of direct JDBC calls are no longer needed
  5. As absurd as it may seem, Coldfusion 32bit doesn't play well with large queries (blob, clob etc) to Oracle11g 64bit, and strangely so, it is true for the opposite, 64bit Coldfusion with 32bit Oracle9i
  6. Minimal code changes were required and the built in code analyzer was almost perfectly accurate except for one thing. Previously in ColdfusionMX you could have tags within your statements and there was no error, now you can't have tags anywhere other than within tags
As always feel free to drop me a line if there is something misrepresented and/or if you have specific questions.
