PHPWebsite is an opensource solution that was produced by a group of programmers at Appalachian University . It boasts a wide set of features built on a modular frame. There is a large user-base with hundreds if not thousands of themes, templates and the like. Developed under GNU GPL it is completely tweakable.
YET, it isn't exactly the most user-friendly version of a CMS available today. An end-application user/business user would find it's lack of detailed documentation and difficult scalability very frustrating and limiting. What it does lack in documentation and modularity it makes-up for with an easy-install web interface. And even though many developers will opt-out of the "easy-install" to do it more manually, they still won't be too impressed with the limited Skeleton-Module Module that is included. Most PHP programmers will create their own modules and other application adjustments directly to the core code. And if you're going to spend time learning the PHPWS's nomenclature and application structure, why nto just make your own CMS?
The modules included with a fresh install are pretty common. The one notable neatness was the wide variety of options for 'filmstripping' through a selected photo album. The administrative gateway is certainly easy to understand, yet difficult to use. On my third installation (I installed each cMS into three seperate environments) I had a pretty good grasp of the PHPWS Admin end. Needless to say, a business user is most likely not going to be very productive with PWS's administrative components. But a weekend-code-warrior may be more than capable of running a semi-decent site off of a freshly installed version; yet not recommended. Overall PHPWebsite is a good 'hold-off' until you can decide on a more complete and feature rich solution. Or if the business proccesses you're seeking to solve are of a "hey I want a super-blog!" nature. Those just wanting something to throw into your .Com or to just play around with, PHPWS is for you.
